Abstract

At the beginning of 1781, different news that assured that the societies of the Puna of Jujuy were about to rebel motivated the governor of Tucumán to order an expedition and an investigation in the area so that his commander could decide according to the information he gathered. Using as the main source the resulting documents, we wonder about the range and significance given to the circulation of news referring to the insurrectional situation that Charcas was going through, and we inquire, particularly, about the actions and strategies that were undertaken around the presence of different copies of an edict signed by Damaso Katari. We understand that an attack on a center of importance for colonial society was in preparation, for which it was necessary to increase the number of participants. We also consider that the interest in the socialization of the content of the edict among the residents of the Puna of Jujuy had, finally, a specific reach linked to jurisdictional delimitations, existing interpersonal ties, and the situated interpretation given to the news in circulation.
